Description

Daniel Carr’s 2020 Carson City Sesquicentennial die is fittingly struck on a Carson City Morgan dollar for this piece, preserving the CC mintmark, while the generic MMOH die is used on the Morgan dollar obverse. On the reverse the overstrike die is nicely positioned between In God We Trust and the CC mintmark, leaving both visible.

The host coin also has a nice aged patina so that the design shows through the overstrike. It shows through nicely on the reverse but is a bit blurry on the obverse.

Reaction

While the Carson City Mint was opened in 1870, 1870-CC dollars are fairly pricey and are often over $1,000. To overstrike an actual CC coin, an 1890-CC Morgan Dollar seems like a reasonable choice.

While CC Morgan Dollars can be relatively inexpensive, they are still valued. When discussed on the Collectors Universe forums, one reaction was:

I agree it’s a neat piece but I would not have done this to a cc coin…pretty ballsy…
